Cure Coalition Statement on Agency Actions to Phase Out Animal Testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cure Coalition recognizes the recent actions by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Food and Drug Administration to advance biomedical research, strengthen research standards, and reduce animal use when effective alternatives are available. HHS has specifically identified validation as a core component of its strategy, alongside innovation and investment, calling for new methods to be rigorously tested to ensure they are reliable, effective, and safe alternatives to animal studies.

“Modernizing biomedical research requires embracing promising new technologies while maintaining the scientific rigor patients depend on,” said Cara Kingan, Executive Director, Cure Coalition. “Validated nonanimal methods should be used when they can provide the evidence needed, while researchers must retain access to animal studies when they remain scientifically necessary. The standard should be clear: use the method that provides the most reliable evidence for the scientific question at hand, with validation guiding when new approaches are ready to replace existing models.”
