WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cure Coalition commended the House Committee on Appropriations for advancing the Fiscal Year 2027 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, approved June 9 by a vote of 34 to 28. The bill insists that New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) be properly qualified and validated before they replace the methods used to keep American medicines safe.
“New methods must be validated, period,” said Cara Kingan, Executive Director of Cure Coalition. “This bill directs NIH to establish clear criteria to qualify and validate NAMs before they are relied upon for research. A new method is only an advancement if it works as well as, or better than, what it replaces. Anything less puts patient safety at risk.”
The Coalition welcomed the committee report’s direction to NIH to build a validation framework for NAMs with clear qualification and validation criteria, a process for periodic review, and incentives for use where scientifically justified. These measures support the rigorous, transparent U.S. research standard the Coalition and experts have long championed.
Cure Coalition also emphasized the national security stakes. The bill prioritizes biomedical research as a counterweight to China’s rapidly expanding investment in science, dedicating $48.8 billion to sustaining U.S. research leadership. As Beijing races to dominate the future of medicine, the Coalition warned that abandoning validated safety methods before alternatives are proven would undercut the rigor that distinguishes American research and cede ground in a global competition the United States cannot afford to lose.
“Patient safety and American leadership depend on getting this right,” Kingan said. “We thank Chairman Cole and Subcommittee Chairman Aderholt for their leadership, and we urge the full House and Senate to preserve these provisions.”
